Dear Esteemed Colleagues, HKOS Members, and Friends,

I am deeply grateful for the privilege of serving as the President of the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society (HKOS). Having been a part of the HKOS Council for a decade, I am truly honored to be part of this exceptional profession and dedicated community of ophthalmology.

As we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of HKOS this year, we reflect upon the remarkable progress and expansion of ophthalmology in Hong Kong. HKOS was officially established on 16th August 1954 with Dr Dansey Browning as our first President. Ever since then, our Society has played a pivotal role in advancing the field. Being one of the most active and prominent medical groups in Hong Kong, HKOS aims to facilitate local and international collaboration, bridging ophthalmology professionals from different sectors. We are committed to upholding professional standards, promoting public awareness of eye diseases, and facing challenges with unity and determination.

HKOS has always prioritized fostering unity and camaraderie among our members. Through various sports and social activities, we have built a strong sense of community and friendship. Our publication, "Eye Opener," serves as a channel for member communication and features personal stories that inspire and connect us.

Looking towards the future, our focus will be on organizing more face-to-face activities for our members in the post COVID-19 era, providing enhanced professional and public education, and strengthening local and international connection. We are devoted to creating a platform for the knowledge exchange, driving positive impact, and ensuring quality ophthalmic care in Hong Kong.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our young ophthalmologists to join our activities and various subcommittees. We need energetic people with fresh perspectives. Whatever your strengths and interests, there is a place for you in our Society. Please reach out to me or our council members to explore how you can get involved. I can promise you that it will be one of the most rewarding aspects of your career in this field, which we are all fortunate to be a part of.

With the unwavering support of our dedicated members, the collaboration of the academic, public, and private sectors, and the contributions of both junior and senior ophthalmologists, we will embrace continued success on this journey of advancement and strive for excellence. Let us join hands and work together to shape the future of ophthalmology in Hong Kong and beyond. Together, we can make a difference.

Dr Emmy Li
President, Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society
